This 5-day desert tour from Fes to Marrakech via Erg Chebbi Dunes is a great way to explore the south of Morocco. It is a Sahara Desert tour. It will allow you to travel through the Moroccan desert, cross the Atlas Mountains, visit the Azrou cedar forest, and see the Barbary apes. Then, you’ll cross the Ziz Valley with its green palms. You’ll camel trek in the Erg Chebbi dunes.
Finally, you’ll admire the sunset and sunrise over the dunes. Leaving the desert, you will have a night in Dades Valley. You will visit nomad families living in a cave. Then, explore a UNESCO World Heritage site, the kasbahs of Ait Benhaddou.
Finally, cross the High Atlas Mountains to reach Marrakech.
This 5-day tour from Fes to Marrakech is rewarding for those with time in Fès. It covers a variety of sites in the magical south of Morocco.
Pick up from your riad/hotel in Fes. Then, go for the Sahara desert, home to the Erg Chebbi dunes. We will pass through the alpine town of Ifrane. Then, we will visit the cedar forest in Azrou, where the monkeys are.
After that, we will drive across the Middle Atlas Mountains. We’ll spend most of the day winding through forests, springs, rocky cliffs, and Berber villages. They’re all beautiful. We’ll stop in Midelt for lunch. Then, we’ll admire the panoramic views of the palm trees and the green valley in the Sahara at Ziz Valley. Then, we will continue to Merzouga, where you will have a relaxing night in the hotel. You’ll be fully rested for tomorrow’s Sahara adventure.
Today we will explore the desert. We will see the Erg Chebbi dunes, the largest in Morocco. You’ll have this morning to explore Merzouga. Then, prepare for a memorable night under the stars. We will visit the Gnawa people, who are originally slaves from Sudan. We want to experience their music and lifestyle. Enjoy the panoramic view behind the Erg Chebbi of dunes.
Afterward, we will visit the nomads’ families in their tents. Having tea with them will give you a new sense of life. In the afternoon, meet your camel. Then, trek through the desert, over the red dunes, until all you see is sand and sky. The quiet is broken only by the occasional camel snort and the soft sound of their steps on the sand. Stop to watch the sunset along the way to your camp.
After admiring the dunes and landscapes, enjoy a Moroccan dinner under the stars by the campfire. After dinner, you will gather around the fire. You will admire typical Berber music, played on drums, under a starry sky.
We will wake up early to watch the best sunrise of your life. It will cast different shadows and colors over the sea of dunes. Then, we will return to a local hotel for a hot shower and breakfast. We will leave Merzouga for Rissani. It has the largest, most crowded weekly market in southern Morocco. We will walk to see the craft stores, the dates market, and the animal trades (goats, sheep, donkeys, camels, and cows). Then, we will continue to Erfoud, famous for its fossilized marble.
After that, we will reach the Todra Gorges, the highest oasis valley gorge in Morocco. We will watch the panoramic views of the old mud Berber villages overlooking the valley. Go to the Gorge and walk under the 300m high red cliff. Many rock climbers come to enjoy their sport there.
We’ll drive through the Dades Valley. We’ll end our day with a night in a nice hotel in the Valley’s heart.
Leave Dades Valley for Ouarzazate. We’ll take the Thousand-Kasbah road and stop at Kalaat Mgouna, “the rose city.” It’s known for its roses and a May festival. Then, we’ll reach the palm groves of Skoura. You’ll be impressed by the landscapes and the palm tree shadows on the road. No one seems in a hurry to leave.
After 45 km, we’ll arrive in Ouarzazate, “the Hollywood of Africa.” The town has one of the biggest studios. Many Hollywood blockbusters and historical TV shows, including Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia, used the homes of the wealthy and powerful as backdrops.
If you are a fan of A Game of Thrones, you will recognize it.
After breakfast in the hotel, we can visit Taourirt Kasbah. This former Glaoui residence, on the town’s edge, is one of Morocco’s most beautiful kasbahs. After that, we will drive outside the town to enjoy a private visit to the Atlas Corporation Studios. Before we head to the famous Kasbah Ait Benhaddou, 30 kilometers from Ouarzazate.
The Kasbah is a red earth castle on the ancient Kasbah road. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site. It has also been the backdrop for many films. They include Lawrence of Arabia, The Last Temptation of Christ, Gladiator, and Game of Thrones.
Then, our Fes Merzouga Desert trip will end by crossing the high Atlas mountains. We’ll pass through the Berber town of Taddert. Then, we’ll cross the 2260-meter-high Tizi-in-Tichka pass. We’ll stop for views and to take pictures of the Berber villages and the beautiful landscapes. Before we reach the red city, Marrakech, we drop you off at your hotel/Riad or Airport and end our services.

Fes / Marrakech
While possible, a day trip to the desert from Marrakech is not recommended. The nearest desert, Agafay, is about 1 hour away but doesn’t offer the full Sahara experience. For true desert landscapes, a 4 days fes to marrakech desert tour
The nearest desert-like landscape, Agafay, is about 30 km from Marrakech. However, the iconic Sahara dunes at Merzouga are approximately 560 km away, requiring a journey of 8-9 hours by car.
Popular stops between Marrakech and Fes include The Famous Kasbah Of Ait Benhaddou, Dades Gorges, Todra Gorges, Merzouga the Sahara desert, Ifrane (Morocco’s “Little Switzerland”), the cedar forests of Azrou, the Ziz Valley, and the town of Midelt. These stops offer diverse landscapes and cultural experiences along the journey.
Trail4611372024-12-10 Amazing! This was one of the best trips I’ve ever taken! My friend and I booked Morocco Camel Trekking for an 8 day tour of the country starting in Casablanca. Ibrahim was so easy to work with and took care of everything. The riads we stayed in were lovely and the camel ride through the Sahara was memorable and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Aziz was our guide and he was phenomenal! I can’t recommend Ibrahim and Aziz enough! Alyssa P2024-11-24 Unexpected and Unforgettable My friend and I had the pleasure of exploring Morocco with the exceptional tour guide Aziz and I cannot recommend him enough! From the moment we arrived, his knowledge of the culture, history, and landscapes of Morocco was evident. He was not only highly professional, but also passionate about sharing the rich heritage of their country. He also loved hearing about our own culture. I will never forget rocking out to Blue driving through the Atlas Mountains.Throughout the journey, he took us to hidden gems off the beaten path (Berber pizza picnic in the desert!!) offering insider insights that we wouldn't have discovered on our own. He was always attentive to our needs (whether food or breaks) and was committed to making the trip unique for us so he always presented us with options or asked if there was anything specific we wished to see or do. Whether we were wandering through the vibrant souks of Marrakech, marveling at the stunning landscapes of the Atlas Mountains, or exploring the ancient medinas of Fez, Aziz made every experience feel personal as well as safe.He was attentive to our needs, ensuring we were comfortable and enjoying the journey at our own pace. His warm hospitality, coupled with their deep respect for the local culture, truly enhanced our trip. I left Morocco with a deeper understanding of the country's beauty and history, thanks to Aziz. If you're planning a trip to Morocco, I highly recommend this guide—an unforgettable experience awaits! I am forever spoiled for future tour guides. Vacation4332024-06-14 Camel riding in Sahara We had the best tour guide, You SseF!! Highly recommend him and our driver , Mohamed. Such an incredible experience. Hopefully, go back someday Craig M2024-04-25 Last minute trip exceeded our expectations! An amazing trip that exceeded our expectations. We booked last minute and Ibrahim was responsive to our ask and questions. We were picked up by Ali on time the morning of. Ali was great. His knowledge of the area was good and we were able to just chat about life in Morocco compared to the US and vice versa. The drive through the Atlas Mountains was incredible as were just about all the sites we stopped at. The first night at the hotel was exceptional with good views of the Dades, a super comfortable room, good staff, and a great meal. Ali was helpful in finding us shops and cash points as we needed and even took us out of the way to his favorite hometown restaurant. The camel trekking was good but fair warning it is uncomfortable. Our guide Yassan was friendly and appeared to treat his camels well. There is a sweet spot on the dunes where you can't see the town you left from nor the camp you are heading to and that is just awe-inspiring. The camp was more like glamping with rooms nicer than most hotel rooms! We enjoyed dinner and then hearing traditional Berber music. If I had to pick a negative it would probably be two of the three lunch locations. Keep in mind that these are remote areas and while the food was totally fine, it wasn't as good as the dinners. But I suggest approaching these with a mindset that they are refueling stops and not worry too much about them as they are very reasonably priced. Great tour, amazing driver in Ali, well organized from start to finish. Could not recommend more! Enno V2024-03-13 Highly recommended desert and Atlas Mountains tour We had a great 3-day trip from Marrakech to Merzouga (for a night in the desert) ending up in Fes. Making arrangements with Ibrahim — from initial email inquiry to booking — was a breeze, and he answered all our naive questions as first-time travelers to Morocco. Our guide Youssef was friendly, charming, and took care of our every need while sharing his firsthand experiences as the child of Berber nomads. The accommodations and meals along the way were all pleasant surprises. Highly recommended! Roberts F2024-03-06 An incredible experience! Would highly recommend this tour! Exactly what I had in mind. Great communication, and answered my questions in a timely manner. Ali was our guide, and took great care of us! He showed us his country with love and passion! Would recommend him as a driver! We went to Erg Chebbi dunes, and it was so unreal. I couldn’t get over the views. Did the camel ride, watched the sunset, stayed in the camp, ate amazing meals, listened to them perform their traditional music (even joined in playing the drums) climbed up the highest dune, and sand boarded. It was an amazing time, and an experience you won’t forget! Alessandro R2024-02-17 Highly recommended Our guide Youssef is a very kind person, he took care of every details during the trip and he was able to tell us stories and traditions about morocco during our long trip. Really excellent guida and highly recommended journey! Alessandro & Federica David P2023-12-11 Exciting and enlightening. More than we expected! What a fabulous way to see Morocco! The personal service that we got from our driver and guide, Ali was great. By the end of the trip we felt that we were leaving family behind. The accommodations were great and the service we received from Ali and Ibrahim was stellar. Looking at many different tour companies and itineraries, this one was the most thorough and gave us a good understanding of Morocco. The camel trek, tour of Fez and the stay in Chef Chaoun were the highlights. We loved Marrekesh and got to understand its great history. We’ve taken many tours and have travelled to over 65 countries. This trip and tour company is high on our list. Pascale Booysen2023-08-30 The trip of lifetime! This was undoubtedly the trip of a lifetime! The whole tour was excellent value for money. I really don't think we would have been able to see so much of Morocco any other way. Our tour guide Mustafa and driver Yusef were amazing. They looked after us every step of the way! If you have a chance to see Morocco - don't hesitate to book with this company. You won't regret it! Klaudia G.2023-05-03 Amazing Morocco tour !! Our 7-day tour from Casablanca to Marrakech via Chefchaouen -Fes- Sahara Desert of Merzouga was an unforgettable experience. The trip was very well organised from first to last and everything ran very smoothly. The car was extremely comfortable and spotless. We really appreciated the air con and the small bottle of cold water that was waiting for us every single morning. Our driver was Idir, a super friendly, kind and helpful chap. He knew the best photo spots and took us to the best places with high quality products. Best driver ever!! Very professional, we felt totally safe all the time. The riads that we stayed in were stunning, clean with very friendly staff. The restaurants where we stopped for our lunches had delicious food. The sunset camel ride and the night spent in the desert were the top attractions, breathtaking and totally unmissable. After a traditional dinner at the desert camp, Ibrahim surprised us with a delicious cake and a bottle of moroccan wine (this trip was our delayed honeymoon so that was very sweet of him). Sitting around the campfire in great company while Ibrahim, Idir and other guys were playing berber music on the drums under a sky full of stars was something magical. On this trip we discovered so many amazing places, beautiful people, great food and I completely fell in love with Morocco. We will definitely come back and contact Morocco Camel Trekking again for another unforgettable tour. Grazie!!
We had a fantastic time on our five-day trek from Fes to Marrakech! We were able to see so much more of the country and experience more of the culture than I ever thought possible in such a short amount of time. The camel trek and night in the desert, in particular, was an incredible experience! Not something to miss!
Lhoucine, our guide, was wonderful! Very knowledgeable and informative, and made sure we were able to see and do everything we wanted to along the way. Overall fantastic experience and 5-star service all the way around!
